Couple receive martial arts honors

Kathy and Rob Olevsky, the owners of Karate International on Spring Forest Road, were recognized recently by the United States Martial Arts Association for outstanding achievements in martial arts.

Kathy was the first female to ever be inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. She currently holds a sixth-degree black belt in Sanshin Kai Karate.

Rob, who has already been inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, was awarded the "Grand Master of the Year Award." He currently holds high-level black belts in four different styles of martial arts.

Millbrook graduate wins UPS award

A 2001 Millbrook High School graduate has been awarded an $8,000 scholarship from The UPS Foundation.

Christopher Gentry Duncan, 18, was chosen as one of 129 winners of the James E. Casey Scholarship, an annual award presented by The UPS Foundation.

Chris, the son of Kim and Anita Duncan of Raleigh, will attend N.C. State University this fall.

McDonald's aids immunization effort

North Carolina First Lady Mary Easley recently helped launch a joint public-private campaign aimed at improving immunization rates in the state.

From now until Sept. 30, participating McDonald's restaurants will distribute immunization education materials in both English and Spanish.

McDonald's also will offer free "McDonaldland" stickers and coupons for ice cream cones to immunized children.
